Over 200 entrants braved single digit temperatures to participate in the Burbank Park District's annual Frosty 5K Run / 1 Mile Walk this year. Although forecasted morning snow showers never materialized, overcast skies and a windchill temperature of about 0° greeted the competitors at race time.
The run/walk started from the corner of 81st Street and Oak Park Avenue with the starter horn sounding at 9 a.m. The 5K (3.1 mile) TAC certified course wound it’s way east to McVicker Avenue, south to 85th Street, and back toward New Castle Park were the runners crossed the finish line (see map below).
The streets were mostly bare and dry but runners did have to contend with slick spots along the route. Most runners were warmly dressed but a few brave souls competed with large amounts of bare skin exposed to the elements. Perhaps the most unconventionally dressed entrant ran the course in an abominable snowman costume!
All participants received a long sleeve T-shirt and were treated to bananas, oranges, muffins, cookies, hot soup, coffee, and hot chocolate upon finishing. Awards were given to overall winners and 1st and 2nd place winners in each category.
