The Book of Ralph by John McNally
|
"Those Readers Familiar With the southwest side of Chicago may be curious about a few details. For Starters, the vast majority of this book takes place in a city that resembles Burbank, Illinois, a southwest suburb that borders Chicago. I'll confess; I grew up in Burbank, so the resemblance is, at times, uncanny." John McNally is a professor of English at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. John grew up in Burbank and is a graduate of Jacqueline B. Kennedy School (class of '79) and Reavis High School (class of '83).
His novel THE BOOK OF RALPH is set in Burbank in the late 1970s and features Duke's, Sheridan Drive-in, Haunted Trails, R&D's, and Ford City Mall's Peacock Alley among other places. It's a must read for all Burbankians! For a short time, John authored a detailing his memories growing up in Burbank. Although there are no recent entries, check out John's recollections of when he resided here in "Beautiful Downtown Burbank." |
Chuck's Southern Comforts Cafe
Chuck's Southern Comforts Cafe, known to locals as just plain old "Chuck's," put Burbank on the culinary map!
Burbank native and Reavis grad Chuck Pine acquired his kitchen chops while working at Topolobampo under legendary Chicago chef Rick Bayless. In 1995 our local chef opened Chuck's Southern Comforts Cafe at it's original location near 79th St. and Central and it wasn't long before Chuck's thriving business forced him to expand. But as word spread of his succulent BBQ ribs, delicious pulled pork, and flavorful Mexican specialties the crowds just kept coming and Chuck was forced to relocate to an even larger space to accommodate his hungry patrons. Chuck's is now located at 6501 W 79th Street in the old Burbank Rose building. The Voodoo Lounge, Chuck's Cajun sports bar, boasts one of the best beer menus on the southside! Chuck's Southern Comforts Cafe has been featured on Check Please!, Chicago's Best, and Dinner's, Drive-Ins and Dives. |

Jalisco Mexican Restaurant

Our favorite taqueria in the Southwest 'burbs! The prices are reasonable, the portions are generous, and the authentic Mexican food is simply outstanding!
