Police documents indicate Cesar Uribe, 32, suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his left hand while inside the restaurant located at 5612 W. 87th Street. No one else was injured in the incident.
A restaurant employee called 911 around 6:08 p.m. on December 14 and reported that a customer had shot himself. Uribe had already left the scene when police arrived.
The employee told responding officers Uribe was waiting for his food when she heard a gunshot and turned to see him bleeding from his hand. According to the employee, Uribe said, “I shot myself,” and left the restaurant.
Uribe drove to his cousin’s house after leaving Papa’s and then went to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park for treatment of his injury, according to police. Hospital officials alerted police, as required by law, after Uribe arrived with a gunshot wound.
Uribe told police he was attempting to retrieve his car keys from underneath his holstered pistol in the pocket of his jacket. Uribe said he was having difficulty getting the holstered pistol out of his pocket so he withdrew the gun from the holster and was transferring it to his other hand when it accidentally discharged, according to police documents.
The spent shell casing and projectile were recovered from the restaurant, police said. The pistol, a 9mm Springfield Armory XD-S, was recovered from inside a residence.
Police said Uribe has a valid FOID card and possesses a concealed carry permit.
Uribe was taken into custody by Burbank police after being discharged from the hospital. He was released on an I-Bond and is due in court on January 27 at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
The owner of the pizzeria, Eric, who did not want his last named used, said he was thankful that no other customers were in the restaurant when the gun went off and that none of his employees were hurt.
According to Eric, the bullet caused minor damage to the wood trim just below the front counter. The restaurant closed for about two hours after the shooting.
Eric said the incident really shook him up and is considering posting a “no guns allowed” sign on the door.
