The accident happened in the 5700 block of 82nd Street at about 3:45 a.m. according to Burbank police. The vehicle appeared to be traveling northbound on State Road when the vehicle departed the roadway and struck a tree — based on tire tracks at the scene of the crash.
Burbank Fire Chief David Gilgenberg said firefighters engaged in an “extensive extrication operation” to free the trapped driver who was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
The property owner said he was awakened by the crash and looked out the window to see a car wrapped around a tree in his side yard and a Burbank police car parked behind it. The man said firefighters had to cut the car into several pieces to get the driver out.
The driver was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, according to police. The name of the driver is not being released pending notification of next of kin.
Burbank Police Division Chief Mike Dudlo said it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
“The investigation is continuing and the South Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting,” Dudlo said.
