Burbank Police Division Chief Mike Dudlo said the homicide investigation is still active and Burbank detectives are working with the FBI and other government agencies to locate Jimenez who remains a fugitive.
Dudlo said that although Jimenez’s exact location is unknown, Burbank Police continue to receive leads as to his whereabouts.
“We are following up on all leads coming in,” Dudlo said. “While the leads are more of a trickle now, we still get new ones every month or so.”
According to police, Carrera married Jimenez on Friday May 11, 2012 in a spur-of the-moment ceremony at Chicago City Hall. After the wedding, the newlyweds celebrated with friends and family by dining at a Little Village restaurant and concluded the evening at a Northside night club. The couple was last seen about 4 a.m., Saturday, May 12, 2012 as they headed home to their Burbank condo.
Family members became concerned the following afternoon when Carrera failed to pick up her two young children as planned, according to reports. A family member asked Burbank police to conduct a well-being check after multiple calls to her cellphone went unanswered.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., Burbank police entered Carrera’s condo in the 7800 block of Rutherford Avenue and discovered her lifeless body in the bathtub. According to police, Carrera was wearing a silver sequin cocktail dress — the same one that friends said she wore during the wedding celebration.
The Cook County Medical Examiner said Carrera died from multiple stab wounds and ruled her death a homicide.
Oak Lawn Patch reported that Jimenez contacted his sister, telling her that he had a “bad fight” with Carrera and left her bleeding, according to a federal warrant. He had another conversation with someone described as a “close associate.” Jimenez said he was leaving Illinois and if questioned by police, to tell law enforcement that he was going to Mexico.
Burbank investigators quickly established probable cause and Jimenez was charged with first degree murder. A Cook County judge issued a warrant for his arrest on May 15, 2012.
According to the FBI, Jimenez may have fled to Durango, Mexico. He also has ties to Texas and North Carolina. A federal arrest warrant was issued after Jimenez was charged federally with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Arnoldo Jimenez. Anyone with information about Jimenez should contact their local FBI office or the Burbank Police Department at 708-924-7300.
“We are hopeful to make an arrest in this case,” Dudlo said. “What was done to Estrella by the hands of her new husband on her wedding day was horrible. She and her family deserve to have her murderer brought to justice and this department is doing everything we possibly can to make that happen."
