The Burbank Beat received the following narrative from the Burbank Police Department this morning. It is also posted on the Burbank Illinois Police Department Facebook page:
On January 15th, 2014, at approximately 10:00 am, Division Chief Brian Bembenek was driving to work in his personal vehicle and observed a suspicious vehicle occupied by three male subjects driving around the Burbank area. DC Bembenek had his portable radio with him and alerted patrolling officers to the area of 78th and Central. As DC Bembenek was following the vehicle, he observed the vehicle driving in the alley-way on the 7700 block between Lotus and Linder Avenues. DC Bembenek then observed two of the occupants exit the vehicle and disappear in a gang-way on the 7700 block of Lotus. The vehicle began to leave the area with DC Bembenek following and was subsequently stopped by officers in the area of 79th and Lavergne. After the stop of this vehicle, DC Bembenek returned to the area he last saw the two subjects exit the vehicle. DC Bembenek then observed the same two subjects exiting a residence on the 7700 block each carrying black backpacks heading towards the alley. When assisting officers arrived to the area, the subjects were no longer carrying the backpacks. After a brief investigation, two backpacks were located in a garbage can of the victim’s residence. The backpacks were filled with numerous electronic items. Officers then discovered a broken window on the residence and made entry to the residence, discovering the house to be ransacked. The subjects and the backpacks were transported the Burbank Police Department for further investigation.
Contact was made with the homeowners and it was learned the items recovered within the backpacks (including the backpacks) were indeed the property of the residents. The homeowners never gave anyone permission to gain entry into their home and remove any items. After detectives interviewed the offenders, it was learned they came to Burbank to break into homes and steal whatever they could. It was also learned, the offenders chose Burbank because “The (people) there have good (stuff).”
Charged with Residential Burglary was 21 year old Antonio Lemus of Berwyn and 18 year old Julio Guzman of Chicago. Both of these individuals are self-admitted gang members. The driver of the vehicle was not charged at this time. The property had been returned to the victims and two criminals had been arrested as a result of Division Chief Bembenek’s years of law enforcement experience and dedication to the citizens of Burbank.
