Police say the driver of the 2005 Ford Escort noticed black smoke coming from underneath the hood and pulled over near Monitor Avenue.
A Burbank police officer who was patrolling the area observed the motorist in distress and called the Burbank Fire Department to assist. The police officer attempted to douse the flames coming from the engine compartment with a fire extinguisher but was unsuccessful.
The car was completely engulfed in flames when the fire department arrived on the scene but crews quickly brought the blaze under control.
The driver was uninjured however the car sustained major damage according to police. Officials believe faulty wiring and leaking fuel caused the fire.
