The accident happened on Feb. 19 about 3:45 a.m. when a 2007 Lexus driven by Jimenez ran off State Road near 82nd Street and slammed into a tree, according to police.
Jimenez, the sole occupant of the vehicle, had to be extricated from the wreckage by Burbank firefighters and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center with serious injuries.
Burbank Police Division Chief Mike Dudlo said the incident began when a patrol officer near 85th Street clocked the Lexus on radar traveling over 65 mph southwest-bound on State Road.
“As the officer attempted to catch up, he observed the offending vehicle pull into the Burger King parking lot,” Dudlo said. “The officer attempted to pull Jimenez’s vehicle over but Jimenez failed to stop or listen to the officer’s commands and fled the parking lot in his vehicle.”
Reversing course, Jimenez sped off northeast-bound on State Road. The officer briefly lost sight of the Lexus but moments later discovered the car crashed into a tree.
“Once the officer arrived to the area of 82nd Street, he observed a single car accident and identified it as Jimenez’s vehicle,” Dudlo said.
Burbank detectives investigating the crash were assisted by the South Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team. Officials say alcohol was a factor in the serious accident.
Jimenez voluntarily turned himself into police Friday evening after being discharged from the hospital but refused to make a statement, Dudlo said.
Police charged Jimenez with driving under the influence of alcohol and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, both misdemeanors. He was issued traffic citations for driving an uninsured motor vehicle, improper lane usage, and speeding.
Jimenez is scheduled to appear in court March 10 on the misdemeanor charges.
While investigating the crash, detectives discovered Jimenez was wanted in connection with a hit-and-run accident that occurred in Burbank on Feb. 9. According to police, Jimenez was driving on State Road near 79th Street when he sideswiped a limousine while attempting to pass it and failed to stop.
“No injuries were reported but the occupants and witnesses of the incident rendered information which subsequently identified Jimenez as the driver of the vehicle,” Dudlo said. “Jimenez was driving the same vehicle used in the incident on Feb. 19.”
Detectives cited Jimenez for improper lane usage and leaving the scene of a property damage accident in connection with the incident.
