Court records indicate Mohammad Abid, 21, of the 7500 block of S. Mason Avenue has been charged with aggravated robbery and attempted aggravated battery stemming from the incidents.
According to Division Chief Mike Dudlo of the Burbank Police Department, Abid entered the Fuel Zone, 6027 W. 79th St., Burbank, on April 17, around 8:40 p.m. and asked for cigarettes. As the clerk turned to retrieve the merchandise, Abid allegedly pulled out a silver semiautomatic handgun and demanded cash and cigarettes.
The employee gave Abid an undisclosed amount of cash and a bag full of cigarettes, Dudlo said. As Abid was leaving, the bag broke spilling packages of cigarettes over the floor. After refilling a second bag with the cigarettes, Abid fled the scene westbound, according to Dudlo.
Around 8:52 p.m., while police were still at the Fuel Zone, a second robbery was reported at Geo’s Gyros, 7090 W. 79th St., Burbank.
According to Dudlo, Abid entered the restaurant and approached the counter. After being told to wait his turn, Abid demanded money and pointed a silver handgun at the owner, who refused to comply with Abid’s demands.
Dudlo said police were alerted to the attempted robbery by several 911 callers including a patron inside the restaurant and a customer who witnessed the incident from the drive-thru lane.
Abid noticed the customer inside Geo’s calling 911 and pointed the gun at him before deciding to flee, Dudlo said. When Abid exited the restaurant, he was taken into custody by Bridgeview and Bedford Park officers who had been alerted by dispatchers to both robberies.
Abid is being held at the Cook County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail. His next scheduled court appearance is May 11, at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
Abid was arrested in November 2015 and subsequently pled guilty to making a false 911 call in which he told dispatchers that he was being held hostage by three men with guns.
