Police say a teenage girl is in the hospital tonight after being stabbed during an altercation at a home in the 8000 block of South Nashville Avenue. The incident happened about 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.
Officers responded to a disturbance at the home after witnesses reported that a large group of teens had gathered in the area to watch a fight.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers observed a juvenile female who appeared to be bleeding. Police summoned paramedics who transported the girl to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.
Authorities say the victim is being treated for a total of four stab wounds. Details of her condition were not immediately available but police described the injuries as serious.
Police say the incident was not gang related and believe the fight may have stemmed from an on-going feud between several girls over social media.
Teens at the scene who said they were familiar with the situation, indicated the girls involved in the fight are students at Reavis High School and said the dispute has been brewing for several days over comments posted on Twitter.
Police are not releasing the names of the minors.
Burbank Police Division Chief Mike Dudlo said a knife, which is believed to have been the weapon used in the incident, was recovered from the residence.
“Two female juveniles are in custody and are being investigated further as to their involvement,” Dudlo said. “Detectives are working with the State’s Attorney’s office and are exploring charges for those involved in this incident.”
Police say the investigation is on-going.
On Friday, March 20th, 2015 at approximately 3:05 pm, Burbank officers were dispatched to the 8000 blk of Nashville Avenue (Burbank, IL.) for a juvenile disturbance involving approximately 20-30 kids. While enroute, officers were receiving information from dispatch stating citizens felt as though the juveniles were getting ready to fight. As officers arrived, they were met by a 17 yr. old female juvenile who advised she had just been stabbed. Upon the arrival of paramedics, it was learned the stabbing victim received multiple stab wounds about her back and chest areas.
Investigators learned the stabbing victim and another 17 yr. old girl were having “issues” over social media sites which escalated. As the stabbing victim came to the house of her adversary, tempers flared, and a physical confrontation ensued leaving one girl stabbed multiple times.
All of the parties have been identified. Due to the parties involved all being less than 18 years of age; names, addresses and personal information are being withheld to protect their identity. The investigation is on-going. No charges have been filed and none are currently pending. No juveniles are in custody and the stabbing victim is doing well at an area hospital recovering from her injuries.
This was an isolated incident and all parties knew each other. This incident was not gang related. This incident was a by-product of social media providing an avenue for teenagers to voice their hostilities and create a volatile atmosphere within the community.
