Division Chief Mike Dudlo of the Burbank Police Department said the shooting occurred on May 6 around 2:36 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of 79th Street near Central Avenue.
The victim, a 19-year-old Chicago man, suffered a gunshot wound to the knee. The man was transported to the hospital for treatment of his injury which police described as a non-life threatening graze wound.
According to Dudlo, the incident began when a black Honda Civic turned from the Speedway gas station at 5550 W 79th Street, onto 79th Street — accidentally cutting off a silver SUV and causing a minor accident.
Police said the passengers in the Civic included three Burbank men and a Chicago resident — the shooting victim — between the ages of 18 and 20-years-old. The men were on their way home from their place of employment in Bedford Park when they stopped at Speedway, according to Dudlo.
The occupants of the SUV were described as two black males and a black female.
After the accident, the two groups emerged from their vehicles and began a verbal altercation which escalated into a physical confrontation. According to Dudlo, one of the men in the SUV retrieved a handgun from the vehicle and began shooting.
Investigators recovered four .38-caliber casings from the scene.
After shots were fired, both groups returned to their vehicles and fled the scene.
The Civic was stopped by police a short distance away. An ambulance was called for the injured man. Dudlo said the four men are cooperating with investigators and have not been charged with a crime.
Police are working to identify the occupants of the SUV. The vehicle was last seen traveling northeast bound on State Road.
Dudlo said investigators have several promising leads and are reviewing video footage from the city’s surveillance cameras and license plate readers.
The incident is not related to other shootings within Burbank in recent weeks, according to Dudlo.
